An analog free-space optical communication link built around matched sender and receiver circuits. On the transmit side, a microphone captures audio, which is boosted through an amplifier stage and modulated onto a laser or infrared beam for transmission through open air. On the receive side, a laser photodetector or IR detector picks up the beam, with the recovered signal passed through amplification and demodulation stages before being reproduced through a speaker.
